Steam Train to Simon's Town with Atlantic Rail

Last updated: Jul 25, 2014

Cape Town is a beautiful part of South Africa, and there are plenty of ways to get around when you're here. One of the most unique ways of exploring the coastline is to take a steam train from Cape Town to Simon's Town.

The train is a great day trip for the whole family, and offers a unique way to experience a bygone era as it chugs its way along the rugged coastline. The route between Cape Town and Simon's Town is a popular train route, but it really comes alive sitting in this steam powered train as you overlook the ever-changing scenery and crashing waves below.

The coaches are made from wood and date from 1922 to 1938, while the steam locomotive powering the train was built in 1949. There is a lounge car with a licensed bar where you can relax with a drink as you watch the scenery pass by. There are many quaint towns through which the train travels, including the charming Kalk Bay.

Departing from Cape Town at 10h30, the train arrives in Simon's Town around 12h30 where you can get out and explore this beautiful and historic town. Then on the return journey, the train departs from Simon's Town at 15h00 and arrives at the Cape Town Station at 16h40. The price for the return trip is R220 for adults and R110 for children aged 3 to 12. For more information email Atlantic Rail at info@atlanticrail.co.za or call 021 556 1012 during office hours.
