The festive season is fast approaching and we're all having to think ahead to what we're going to be doing this year, whether it be a visit to the coast or a holiday away in the bush.
We have compiled a list of 10 things to make sure you've done before you leave the house.
1. Unplug any appliances that will run unnecessarily. Even if they’re switched off they still use electricity so take the plug right out of the socket. Remember to switch off your geyser so that it doesn't burn unnecessary electricity.
2. Switch off your lights and use a timed lighting system for a few hours at night to give that ‘at home’ look. You can buy a timer for your lights at most hardware and home-ware stores.
3. Pack something to keep the kids busy. This can be a vital thing to remember, but kids often don't find the karoo particularly fascinating. For more ideas on what to do go to our article on Travelling With Kids.
4. Have the car serviced before you go, and remember to take a spare set of keys with. Pack a tool kit in the car, as well as spare water, radiator stop leak, and pantihose. No jokes, pantihose can be very useful in case the fan belt goes.
5. You don’t have to take your wallet full of the usual array of credit and store cards on holiday with you, but a credit card can certainly come in very handy. Check the expiry date, and if you’re planning on using it heavily let your bank know so they don’t mistake your spending for fraud and stop your card.
6. Take your passport with you if you’re heading anywhere close to our neighbouring countries. Even if you aren’t sure you’re going to cross the border, it is a nice option to have should you make a last minute change to your itinerary. We were once on holiday in Kruger and wanted to cross into Mozam, but a member of our group unfortunately hadn’t brought his passport along. Also, check the expiry date on the passport.
7. Make a list of all the things you’re going to need to take with you, and then cross them off as you put them into your bags. There are always one or two necessities that end up being forgotten. Finally, double check the list before you close your bags.
8. Inform your security company that you're going to be away, and also ask trustworthy neighbours to keep an eye on your house.
9. Make sure you have your pets well looked after in a good kennel or have someone to house-sit for you. If you’re an animal lover its sure to be one of your top things to attend to. Nothing can spoil a trip quicker than worrying about your pets - so take the time and make sure your ‘best friend’ is well looked after.
