A peaceful stay at Le Bonheur

Last updated: Feb 20, 2017

Bronwyn and her husband recently enjoyed a great weekend away at Le Bonheur in McGregor.

We really loved staying at Le Bonheur in McGregor. From the moment we arrived the restful atmosphere felt like it infused our souls, causing us to slow our breathing and begin to unwind.

It seems like our visit was at the perfect time weather wise. From what we heard, it can get very cold in winter, and very hot in summer, although the rooms at Le Bonheur seemed to be prepared for any eventuality with an electric blanket and hot water bottles for winter and a fan for summer. For those very hot days there’s a beautiful pool. It’s small and mostly just for cooling down but is the perfect addition to the property along with the beautiful garden to relax in.

Our room was high ceilinged with two armchairs, tea and coffee facilities and a very comfortable double bed.

Lying in bed we could see outside beyond our verandah and feel like we were outdoors. The bathroom had both a bath and shower, the latter having two shower heads and a view out a small window. Lying in the bath at night with the huge window next to you and looking at the stars was wonderfully relaxing. There’s a wall outside the bathroom window to ensure privacy as it fronts the street, but it’s low enough to still feel like you’re bathing by starlight.

We had a small veranda area to ourselves with two chairs and a table, perfect for afternoon tea together while listening to the sound of the town … the birds, tyres crunching gravel, laughter in the distance, the sound of horses walking past and somewhere a radio playing old songs.

There’s just one other guestroom attached to the other side of the main house which also sleeps two and also has its own verandah.

Our hosts, Martin and Jenny, are a very friendly couple, helpful and accommodating but also mindful of giving us our space. They live in the main house, which our room was attached to, which gives Le Bonheur a very relaxed ‘home from home’ atmosphere while still maintaining a sense of luxurious comfort. Each morning we walked around to the front patio overlooking the pool and the beautifully landscaped garden where breakfast was served. We had the option of having a breakfast basket brought to our room but with the weather being so great we decided to sit outdoors instead. Breakfast each morning was just right. On our first morning we enjoyed fruit salad with yoghurt, toast with cold meats, avo and a selection of jams, all washed down with fruit juice and coffee. The following morning there was a delicious fruit and yoghurt concoction, homemade egg muffins with cold meats and tomato and again, fruit juice and coffee. Jenny was very accommodating when I informed her before our arrival that I have a wheat allergy.

Martin and Jenny are very hands on and ensure that you have everything you need. It was great chatting with the other two guests during breakfast, and then spending some time relaxing on the patio and chatting with Martin and Jenny. They told us about the history of the town and some of the stories of the locals. It gave us a real picture of the mix of people and how McGregor is a wonderfully close knit community.

McGregor, and specifically Le Bonheur, were the perfect escape for a relaxing weekend which left us feeling both revitalized and refreshed.
