Men's Weekend in Yzerfontein

Last updated: Jul 22, 2014

This past weekend I went away to Yzerfontein for a weekend away with the lads. I hadn’t had a good ‘manly’ holiday in a while and I was looking forward to it. After a short 45 minute drive from Cape Town up the West Coast, we arrived in the small town affectionately known as Yzers.

There’s not a lot to do in Yzerfontein. There are no major sights, there’s no pumping ‘jols’, there’s just the ocean and your house. And this is exactly what I needed at a very busy time of the year. The West Coast is almost the exact opposite of the East Coast. Generally the East Coast is lush and filled with fun and activities, while the West Coast is all about simply putting your feet up. There’s definitely a time and a place for both options, but I was in need of the simplest and most relaxing option possible.

I went away with a bunch of surfers for the weekend, so there was plenty of surfing happening. I’m not much of a surfer, but the swell wasn’t too bad so I headed out on a longboard and managed to catch a wave or two. After paddling myself flat, I went back to the house and just lazed around for a while, getting to watch the start of the Super Rugby season.

There were no responsibilities as the phone was switched to silent and left in the bedroom. Between heading to the beach, watching sport, and eating food there wasn’t a lot of spare time.

I decided to take my friend's skateboard/longboard to the streets of Yzerfontein. I hadn’t skated since I was in primary school, and even then my skating skills were restricted purely to ‘ollies’. So, instead of slowly getting back into skating I decided to take on one of the biggest hills in Yzerfontein. Needless to say I bailed hard. But that’s just the way it goes, and after cleaning out the wounds it was back to the Yzerfontein cycle of relaxation, sport, and braais.

And that is just what I want out of a weekend up the West Coast; a chilled time with a story or two to tell. Heading to work this morning I felt like I had been away for a week at least. Now, I’m ready to take on the next stretch of work with a lot more vigour - knowing that relaxation is just a 45 minute drive up the coast.
