Mitchell’s beer is pretty much an icon in Knysna with the brewery having been started by Lex Mitchell in 1983. Initially only Forester’s Lager and Bosun’s Bitter were brewed by Mitchell’s for distribution in Knysna and it was these two beers that put the brewery on the map. Two of the major industry’s in Knysna in years gone by were forestry, and the shipping of timber from the port of Knysna. Hence the name Forester’s, and Bosun’s from the role of the ‘Bosun’ - being the Captain’s right hand man. Over the years five more beers have been added – and most recently an apple cider – which are now distributed nationally.

For some insight into the brewing industry and to enjoy some beer tasting, the brewery runs tours on weekdays at 11h00, 12h30 and 14h30. The cost is R60 per person and booking is essential.
