Taung Heritage Site

Bophirima

In 1924 Australian Anthropologist, Professor Raymond Dart discovered a skull here belonging to an early hominid and named it “Australopithecus africanus” meaning the “Southern Ape of Africa.” The skull was unearthed due to limestone diggings. This discovery had enormous scientific importance as it advanced the evidence of existence of early man in Africa by more than 1 million years.

The Taung Heritage Site is located west of the village of Taung at the Buxton Quarry and is dedicated to the discovery of the skull. A monument to the discovery is found here, and the site has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other attractions include braai and picnic facilities, an old mine tunnel for exploration and a beautiful spring for all to enjoy.
