The historic town of Graaf Reinet is uniquely surrounded by the Karoo Nature Reserve making it extremely popular with outdoor enthusiasts who are drawn to its wide-open spaces, dramatic landscapes and the soaring cliffs and towering Dolomite columns of the Valley of Desolation. The reserve is home to an abundance of flora and fauna, varied birdlife and wildlife including Cape Mountain Zebra, buffalo and kudu as well as other antelope.

The town is the fourth oldest in the country and boasts 250 buildings that are National Monuments – there are many fine examples of Cape Dutch architecture as well as various museums and exhibits tracing the story of the Karoo and the early Settlers.
