The town of Grahamstown is rich in both culture and history and lies in a valley some 60km from the coast making for an all-year-round mild climate. The town is nearby to game reserves and there are plenty of outdoors and adventure activities to be enjoyed.
In its early days, and as the Cape's second most important city, Grahamstown was a bustling centre with broad tree-lined streets, and many historic buildings including over 40 places of worship. The town is in the heart of frontier country, and saw both a mixing and clashing of cultures where many frontier battles were fought between the Xhosa, Boer and British.
Today the city is a vibrant university town with the highly acclaimed Rhodes University. The annual National Arts Festival held in July draws faithful crowds to celebrate and take part in the best of local arts and entertainment from music to theatre and comedy.
