In the heart of the Free State and in the fertile valley created by the Maluti Mountains is the town of Bethlehem. The name, meaning ‘house of bread’ was given after early farmers found that wheat flourished in the valley – and today, Bethlehem produces 65% of South Africa’s wheat.
The area is scenically beautiful and a number of surrounding dams and nature reserves provide hiking trails and opportunities for bird watching.
