Empangeni is a small town a few kilometres from Richard’s Bay and its commercial harbour. Empangeni grew rapidly after Sugar Cane was planted and the Sugar Mill began operation. The remarkable fertility of the soil led to the growth of what is now the agricultural, commercial and communications centre of the sugar cane and timber industry on the coast.

Empangeni is the ideal town to use as a stop over while exploring Zululand and the coast. The Art and Cultural History Museum is aimed at providing education about the Zulu Culture as well as the history of the Sugar Cane industry. Visitors can also explore the Enseleni Nature Reserve that offers a 7km hiking trail, some game and a few beautiful picnic spots.
