The town of Louis Trichart, recently renamed Makhado, was originally named after the Voortrekker Louis Trichart who settled with his party in the area in 1836. Lying on the southern slopes of the Soutpansberg, the area is extremely fertile with an abundance of flowering trees and tropical fruits such as litchis, mangoes and bananas.
The town is the ideal location from which to explore the surrounding Soutpansberg – meaning “salt pan mountain” – and its rich Venda and Anglo-Boer history and culture. There are a number of nature reserves and scenic drives in the surrounding area for visitors to enjoy.
