Nylstroom, or Modimolle as it has recently been renamed, is the commercial centre of the Waterberg region and is a rich fruit-growing district, famous for its export quality grapes.

The town initially was given its name when a group of Voortrekkers travelling North came across a river and mistakenly thought they had reached Egypt and the Nile River.

The surrounding region offers beautiful scenery and many opportunities for outdoor activities including game viewing, fishing, horse riding, hiking trails and birdwatching in the Nylsvley Nature Reserve. In addition there are eight hot spring resorts in the vicinity to visit and enjoy.
