Dullstroom is one of South Africa’s prime trout and fly-fishing destinations. Here, in the heart of the Highlands Meander, the rivers and dams are well-stocked, the countryside blooms with a carpet of wild flowers in spring and cosy country lodges provide an ideal weekend retreat.

The town, however, was the centre of much blood-shed during the Anglo-Boer war in the early 1880’s and the mountains surrounding Dullstroom provided strategic strongholds to both the local settlers and the British. Dullstroom is home to a few historic buildings as well as the nearby Verlorenvallei (‘lost valley’) Nature Reserve and its wetlands that are home to all three of the world’s endangered cranes including South Africa’s Blue Crane.
