Situated in the fallen crater of a long-extinct volcano lies the 50 000 hectare Pilanesberg National Park. The fertile landscape is home to varied vegetation and four concentric rings of mountains, the highest being the Pilanesberg, which are centered around a man-made lake, Mankwe which is a popular watering spot for game.
The park is in a malaria free zone and is home to the Big Five, a variety of buck including kudu, eland, sable, gemsbok, red hartebeest, tsessebe, waterbuck as well the rare brown hyena and over 300 species of bird.
The park is open to day visitors and offers an excellent network of roads as well as designated picnic spots and a bird hide for birding enthusiasts. There are also a number of private game lodges operating within the park and guests of the adjacent Sun City Resort can also enjoy daily guided game drives into the park. Go on a hot air balloon safari in the park as you glide silently over the bush while watching the wildlife below.
