Founded some 300 years ago, the town of Tulbagh grew and developed over many years leaving behind a variety of Cape Dutch, Victorian and Edwardian houses in this picturesque valley. Although a devastating earthquake in 1969 brought much destruction. Many of the historic buildings were spared and one of the major attractions of the town is Church Street, famous for having the most number of national monuments on one street.
Tulbagh is delightful to visit all year round with plenty to see and do from hiking, fishing, and 4x4-ing to fruit picking and horse riding. The valley is also home to a wide diversity of flora and fauna and veld flowers - making for wonderful scenic walks.
The Tulbagh valley is also well known for its fruit produce - including plums, pears, apples, peaches and prunes. It is also a rich wine producing region and the recently introduced Tulbagh Wine Route attracts many visitors to the wine estates in the valley.
