Situated on the edge of spectacular Blyde River Canyon, the largest green canyon in the world, Blyde Mountain Country House provides the best of everything. A fabulous view from the cliff tops overlooking the 33kmcanyon gorge. Nature and wildlife abound.
A beautiful semi-formal 1.5hectare garden fringed by lowveld bush and lemon orchards, with a fascinating collection of bird-filled trees, shrubs and plants (various species of palm, as well as flamboyant, baobab, aloe, cactus, marula, litchi, cashew, cumquat, papaya, banana etc.
) along footpaths laid out with original, embossed home-made tiles.
Though there are local masks, pots, artwork and photos; this goes hand in hand with ultra-modern trappings like halogen lighting, state-of-the-art taps and sinks, contemporary furniture.
Outside, the romantic terrace offers breath taking views of the canyon promontory. Even the elevated 10mx10m pool (a former farm irrigation reservoir), allows you to peek at the tips of the awesome canyon massif during a relaxing swim. The inviting reclining-chairs alongside provide ideal tanning opportunities.
Active guests of all ages and inclinations will find no end of entertainment.
White-water rafting, canyoning, ballooning, game drives, elephant rides, and cliffside walks.
The less active, meanwhile, can relax in the garden or on the terrace with a sundowner, spellbound by the crepuscular transformations affecting colour and shape of the mighty walls of the dramatic Drakensberg.
ROOMS
There’s plenty of style – the exquisite, subtle interiors are the last word in contemporary organic design, reflecting the architect's work in post-wall Berlin.
The four private, luxury suites with stunning mountain views, the seven semi-luxury guest rooms and six self-catering units make a refreshing change from the prevailing colonial theme hereabouts.
The architect's concept was to combine natural materials with a modern look, without sacrificing comfort. This has resulted in large stone-based beds with mahogany or bark headboards, slate or stone floors (some areas fashioned with pebbles collected along the Blyde banks) adorned with kelims or reed mats, and lofty ceilings (some thatched) with large fans (though all rooms have air-conditioning ). Handmade quilts, white veiled bed canopies and dusky-coloured walls contribute to an ambiance that is both cozy and exotic. Bathrooms are en-suite. Doors open toward the garden, many offering sublime canyon views.
DINING
Breakfasts feature mouth-watering salads of seasonal local fruit: smooth fibreless mangos (the pride of the region), papayas, guavas, Valencia oranges, litchis and indigenous marulas.
Every night a delicious three-course meal, often featuring local dishes created by superb chef Maria Mokwena is served on the sweeping terrace looking out toward the canyon.
Barbeque meals can be set up in the secluded lapa (braai area) near the pool by the baobab trees.
The atmospheric bar opens out onto the terrace, offering its wide selection of prime South-African wines.
