So finding this gem of a stopover in Smithfield on the way to East London did not let us down and is yet more proof we live in a stunning country filled with great beauty, fascinating people and an interesting and diverse history. The cottage we stayed in was neat, clean, full of character and great value for money. Our hosts made the experience that much more fascinating, whilst the food was way beyond our expectations. "After 5 hours on the road with a few stops for roadworks, we were greeted at the gate by Ian; owner of Nick's Place in Smithfield. The weather was hot, we were weary and bedraggled, and the first thing we were offered was a cup of tea - did he read our minds? We found ourselves instantly relaxing and unwinding after our long stretch in the car. We were shown to our rooms, each one beautifully and tastefully decorated with old school farmhouse bits and bobs as well as eclectic art and the comforts of home.

My family and I stayed in the little cottage, a small, quaint and comfortable little house that was a converted stable and wool storage area. All the necessary utensils were there for cooking our own meals, but we chose to eat up at the main house with the other family members who were travelling with us. The menu is full of all sorts of delicious meals, from appetisers to main meals, salads, pizzas and burgers. We all devoured our food and didn't have space to consider dessert.

An early night, peaceful sleep and fresh start in the morning was all we needed to continue on our journey from Joburg to Morgan Bay in the Eastern Cape. Nick's Place was the oasis we needed to find on the way and we'll most certainly be returning another day."
