This area in the centre of Joburg started out as a space for dreary corporate head offices and run-down old buildings, and it is now an exciting and busy suburb and filled with amazing public art, exceptional coffee shops, new restaurants, art galleries, boutique stores, nightclubs and bars. Braamfontein is part of the City's regeneration initiative and has been transformed into a colourful upmarket neighbourhood.
This vibrant suburb has so much to offer, here are a few places to enjoy while in the area:
44 Stanley: This site used to be a series of industrial buildings during the 1930's and has now developed into a variety of speciality boutiques, yummy food shops and design studios including include Vovo Telo, Tin Table, BonBon and Anatomy Design. It boasts a friendly and relaxed environment and is decorated with stylish architecture and beautiful courtyards.
Air Cinema Club: This is an open air cinema experience which takes places on city rooftops in open urban areas. It brings back the magic of cinema and screens all film genres. Tickets can be bought online from Webtickets for R120 per person which includes entrance, bottomless popcorn and a bean bag. Food and drinks are also on sale.
Neighbourgoods Market: This market takes place every Saturday at 73 Juta Street. The goal is to revive and re-invent the public markets. Here you will find a wide variety of farm fresh goodies and speciality goods on sale from gourmet merchants, regional farmers, local designers and more. The market boasts a high standard of quality and originally started in Cape Town.
The Beach: Located on top of 68 Juta street, you'll find this unique bar which is a must visit during summer time. It boasts great views of the city. You'll enjoy the sand between your toes, music by a professional DJ, inflatable pools, lots of cool umbrellas and a variety of food and drinks. Open on Saturdays from 14h00 - 20h00. Entrance is R150 per person, this includes five drinks from the bar.
The Orbit: This live music venue and bistro boasts a dynamic environment where you can enjoy a wide variety of live music, indulge in delicious food and relax with a drink or two.
The Alexander Theatre: Originally opened in 1951, it has now been refurbished and has become a lively and versatile theatre, entertainment and function venue.
While in the area you should also check out the Nelson Mandela Bridge: This bridge has gained iconic status and is located near to the city's CBD. It has an impressive 248m span and is lit up in the colours of the rainbow at night. It was built in 2003 at a cost of R38-million and is the biggest cable-stayed bridge in Southern Africa. The bridge does not only honour Nelson Mandela, it is also a symbol of his role in bridging the Apartheid divide.
The bridge is a fantastic place to view the city - you can either drive over it or take a slow walk in the pedestrian lanes or make use of the bicycle lanes.
You can also catch a bite to eat at some of the best places in town which are all located within Braamfontein, these include Daleahs Eatery, Velo Gallery Cafe, Ramen Asian Noodle Bar, Narina Trogon and the Great Dane Bar - famous for their gourmet hotdogs.
