Extreme Adventures in Cape Town

Last updated: Jun 08, 2015

The Cape Peninsula is home to truly beautiful scenery, with its majestic mountains on the one side and the blue ocean on the other. There are many different ways to experience the fair Cape whether you take a drive over Chapman's Peak or hike up Table Mountain. We take a look at a few of the less conventional ways of getting around the peninsula.

Sea Kayaking

Venture out from Simon's Town Waterfront on a sea kayak and enjoy the beauty of the ocean. The waters of False Bay are home to a number of marine animals, and during winter there is a good chance of seeing whales. The trip lasts two hours and takes you from the waterfront, past the Naval Harbour to Boulder's Beach where you can visit the penguin colony. Depending on the tide you can either stop off on the beach or swim from the kayaks.

The double kayaks that are used are stable and perfect for those with little to no experience on a kayak. The trip costs R250 and leaves every day at 9h30 weather-depending, and in addition at 12h30 and 15h30 between November and December. The tour is run by Kayak Cape Town. For more information you can call 082 501 8930 or go to www.kayakcapetown.co.za.

Tandem paragliding

There's not really a better view in Cape Town than the breath-taking panorama from the air as you circle around Table Mountain. Launching from Lion's Head you'll be able to head out over the ocean before swooping around above the mountains. Tandem paragliding is ideal for first-timers, as a trained professional makes sure all is safe and secure, allowing you to enjoy the magical experience which can last as long as 30 minutes.

This experience is offered by Cape Town Tandem Paragliding and costs R950. For more information you can call 076 892 2283 or go to www.paraglide.co.za.

Motorbike Sidecar

Why not go on an unforgettable drive around the Cape Peninsula in a vintage sidecar from World War II? There are a number of different routes to take as you wind through Cape Town while a licensed driver allows you to just sit back in the sidecar and enjoy this unique and fun experience.

The trips are run by Cape Sidecar Adventures who can be contacted by calling 021 434 9855. Rates include the sidecar and driver, and use of all the riding gear. For an 8 hour drive around the Cape it costs R2400, or for a shorter 2 hour drive the cost is R1200. For more information go to www.sidecars.co.za.
