Organic Farm in Cape Town's Suburbs

Last updated: Jul 23, 2014

Set amongst the suburbs of Claremont, Cape Town is an allotment of ground that has been turned into a fresh, new organic garden. Known as the Ariston Elemental Organic Garden, the plot produces a variety of vegetables, fruit, and herbs.

On the first Saturday of every month a market is held at the garden, selling a variety of organic foods and products. I decided to head out on a sunny winters day to go and visit this small market, quietly hoping for something a little different to the other organic markets. The other markets around are nice, but I was looking for something a little more unique and intimate.

This market was quite different from the others. For one it's a lot smaller, which is nice because I don't like big crowds. Picnic blankets were set up and people were enjoying some of the home-made foods that were on sale. Almost everything is grown on the property, which means everything is as fresh as can be. "Want some basil? Ok, let's go over and pick some."

It felt like the normal people's market. No pretence. I didn't feel 'out' and I just got to relax in this mini-farm in the middle of Claremont.

So if you're keen to break from the usual and try something a little different, why not head to Ariston Organic Market. The next market is happening on 4 August 2012, and as well as fresh produce there will also be a talk on pruning and propagating.

The market is located on the corner of Dunluce Avenue and Malone Avenue, Claremont. For more information about the market, you can visit their Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ariston-Elemental-Organic-Garden/90840664455.
