A new bar called The Beerhouse has opened on Cape Town's Long Street and its claim to fame is the fact that it has 99 different beers on offer - including the best of local and international beers. Owner Randolf Jorberg recently moved to Cape Town from Germany and brought with him a passion for beer and hospitality. The bar is styled after European beer halls and has worked with the 'beer theme' as much as possible from beer tops on the bar counter, to hand basins made from draught taps and old kegs.
As an avid craft beer drinker I felt it was my duty to check out the new pub in town. In fact I was so keen on the new Beerhouse that I decided to go on opening day with a few other lovers of the lager. When we arrived the builders were literally still packing down and we had to wait outside before we could charge in and get ourselves a cold one.
Once inside we got our first beers and settled down at a table. One of my first beers was a Stellenbrau Alumni Ale which is locally produced by a company in Stellenbosch. As an alumnus of Stellenbosch University I felt it my duty to taste the beer that represented me in some way. I was impressed. It had a great ale flavour, with rich caramel flavour followed by a nice, smoky aftertaste. We went on to try a few of the other beers, but I can say (without bias) that the Alumni remains one of my favourite draughts at the Beerhouse.
The Beerhouse also offer tastings where you are able to try a few different brews with the bar staff helping to provide insight into the different beers. And don't worry if beer drinking makes you a bit peckish, the Beerhouse offers some tasty snacks to accompany your beer; from double-fried Belgian fries to Dutch bitterballen, rösti, onion rings, bacon and more.
