The Bioscope Independent Cinema in Joburg

Last updated: Jul 22, 2014

There is a new movie theatre in town! The Bioscope in the Johannesburg City Centre is offering a journey back into the time of bioscopes. When watching a movie was a complete experience, and cinemas were housed in beautiful art-deco buildings. These days cinemas are mostly located in squeaky clean, fluorescent malls and tend to show the same mainstream films.

This independent cinema is aimed at bringing new and interesting content to the South African audience. The Bioscope is aimed at awakening an interest in art house cinema, and giving a stage for South African film-makers to showcase their movies.

Any night of the week you can head down to the Bioscope and enjoy an old art-house classic, or a locally produced film. Broaden your filmic experience by discovering interesting films from around the world, or join for one of the regular film talks with experienced film and media professionals. The Bioscope also showcases film festivals.

The cinema is a 68-seater venue and is located on the groundfloor of Main Street Life. The Bioscope forms part the Maboneng Precinct aimed at urban renewal in the city centre, and looks to promote local arts and culture.
