Michael-John stayed at Wagendrift Lodge and had an amazing time relaxing and enjoying the beauty of the Karoo. Go to their listing to make a booking for a great weekend in the Karoo, or the perfect stop-over along the N1.

Three of us set out from Cape Town to spend some time in the Karoo. After around 3 hours we arrived in Laingsburg where we would be staying for the night at a self-catering lodge called Wagendrift. We decided to pick up some Karoo lamb, biltong, and a few beers for the night. Unfortunately that was all we bought. Somehow our male minds completely forgot to buy anything except meat and beer. No breakfast foods, no vegetables, nothing. It was looking like a very manly stay in the Karoo.

The lodge is set on a working farm with incredible views of the surrounding Karoo mountains with the Buffalo River running nearby. It is beautiful to be able to relax in a little oasis in the middle of the brown Karoo. In front of the lodge is a pool, and it didn't take long to get our swimming shorts on and hop in for a wonderful respite from the heat.

The farm also has wild game including giraffe and zebra, and we decided to take a walk down to the river past the camp sites to spot some game. Unfortunately we didn't spot any. The river, however, was flowing quite fast with some rapids and so we decided to go for another swim. We were taken quite quickly downstream navigating our way past a few boulders in the river and low-hanging branches.

After a few minutes of rapids we got out and started making our way back. Unfortunately we couldn't find the path we had walked down on, and ended up having to bundu-bash with nothing but our swimming shorts on. A few scratches and thorn-in-feet moments later and we found the path and headed back to the lodge for a braai.

We got a massive fire going to cook our 6 chops; if we were going to just be having meat for dinner it was going to be braaied to perfection. It was great sitting in the middle of the Karoo with just good company, a beer, and 2 lamb chops.

The next morning we set out happy and having enjoyed some good rest in the Karoo and wishing we could stay longer. If you're looking to get out of town for a while or are heading between Joburg and Cape Town, make sure to stop off at the Wagendrift Lodge.
