Breakfast Spots Cape Town

Last updated: Nov 28, 2016

I'm a big fan of going out for breakfast (and lunch and dinner...). OK, I'm a fan in general of eating out, restaurants, finding the perfect meal at the perfect spot - the whole experience. There is something about that lazy weekend breakfast, the first sip of artfully brewed coffee and hopefully some kind of view to enjoy that makes me happy. Here are a few 'happy places' for breakfast in and around Cape Town

Great for families - Jonkershuis at Groot Constantia

Be it a hot summers day, or perhaps even better one of those crisp and clear autumn mornings, Jonekershuis at Groot Constantia wine estate is an ideal choice for families. Most parents will agree that 'if the kids are happy; the parents are happy' and here you're able to sit back in a relaxed setting without too much worry and fuss. There also happens to be a beautiful view - sweeping out across vineyards and all the way to False Bay. There are tables indoors, in the vine covered back courtyard or in front of the historic building flanking the oak lined avenue and lawns - these are the most family friendly option. Kids can run around on the lawn, gather acorns, watch squirrels, feed the ducks (with adult supervision) and generally have a little space to roam. There is a good breakfast selection, including a kids menu with a popular French toast & bacon option. Service is attentive. Children welcome - dogs too. Open daily from 9am.

Also try: Blue Water Café at Imhoff Farm, Kommetjie where there is plenty to keep little ones entertained.

Great for something special - Bistro Sixteen82 at Steenberg

For something special, Bistro Sixteen82 at Steenberg wine estate in the Constantia Valley ticks all the boxes. The chic indoor setting is light, bright and airy, while the outdoor terrace is surrounded by water ponds and sculptures. The breakfast menu isn't extensive - but what is there is wonderfully prepared and presented with quality, local ingredients. The Eggs Benedict and Eggs Royale are firm favourites - and better yet, they can be enjoyed with a glass of Steenberg 1682 bubbles. Open daily from 9am.

Also try: Breakfast with a view on the terrace at the Vineyard Hotel in Claremont.

Great for a morning out - Olympia Café, Kalk Bay

Olympia Café on the main road in Kalk Bay is somewhat of an institution- and it's the ideal spot to grab some breakfast as part of a morning out in Kalk Bay exploring the myriad of quaint and quirky shops and galleries that line the main road. It's busy and bustling (some would say chaotic) with a haphazard mix of tables, chairs and people. Long counters at the window are the perfect spot for people watching. Grab a great cup of coffee and one of their freshly baked pastries, or linger longer over one of their cooked breakfasts. Open from 7am for the early crowd.

Also try: Knead in Muizenberg - after an early morning swim or walk along the beach.

Best out of town - Café BonBon at La Petite Dauphine, Franschhoek

This small café style restaurant is housed in an old cellar at the simply gorgeous La Petite Dauphine in Franschhoek. There is a pretty outdoor terraced area beneath the oak trees for warm summer days and cosy indoor seating besides a crackling fire on wintery mornings. Surrounded by the picturesque Franschhoek Mountains and overlooking the plum orchards, Café BonBon has a casual French feel and is instantly welcoming. Excellent food with those little extra touches can be expected, as well as friendly and attentive service. Children are welcome - and the resident rooster is almost guaranteed to make an appearance. This is the same restaurant that serves breakfast to guests staying at the guest cottages and the estate is also a popular wedding venue - so it's advisable to call ahead to check on availability. Open daily from 8am.

Also try: Tokara Delicatessen, Helshoogte Pass, Stellenbosch - family friendly, quirky sculpture filled garden and breathtaking views.

Best neighbourhood favourite - Four&Twenty, Wynberg

Located on Wolfe Street in the heart of Chelsea Wynberg, Four&Twenty Café and Pantry is always bustling with a mix of early morning coffee drinkers, business folks on laptops at the window counters, ladies celebrating special occasions and a mixed bunch of everyone else. Think pretty French café, with whimsical touches, dashes of fresh flowers and a tiny back courtyard. Pretty much all the breakfast offerings are sublime - the menu changes seasonally and almost everything from breads and pastries to preserves and dressings are made on site with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Open from 8am Tuesdays - Saturdays and from 9am on Sundays. Also worth visiting for lunch where you can even enjoy a chilled glass of wine, or a craft beer with your meal.

Also try: Starlings Café, Belvedere Road, Claremont - another hidden gem and absolute favourite amongst the locals.

Best town favourite - Arnold's, City Bowl

If you feel like getting up at the crack of dawn, Arnold's on Kloof Street has one of the best early bird breakfasts around. The breakfast costs just R18 and is available before 7h00. After that there's still plenty of great options to choose from. Another great reason to have breakfast at Arnold's is that all coffees are R10 until 09h30.

Also try: Cocoa Oola on Kloof Street also has amazing breakfasts including a R35 breakfast special including the meal and a cappuccino.
