Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn

Last updated: Jun 10, 2015

The well-known Cango Caves are situated at the foothills of the Swartberg mountain range in the Klein Karoo, just 29km from Oudtshoorn. The caves contain spectacular halls and grand limestone formations (on both tours). The caves attract many visitors from abroad and locally.

Although the chambers of the caves stretch over four kilometres in length, only about a kilometre is open to visitors. Visitors are advised to make a booking for a guided tour beforehand. One can opt for the "Standard Tour" (about an hour), or the thrill-seekers can book the "Adventure Tour" (approximately half an hour longer). The longer tour involves crawling through narrow passages and climbing steep rock formations guided by small lights. The smallest passage that tourists will have to pass through on the Adventure Tour is just under 30cm high at the exit.
