Cherry Picking Season at Klondyke in Ceres

Last updated: Jul 15, 2014

In my experience there are three outings that Capetonians promise to make each year, but never actually get around to doing.

1. Take a trip to see the snow in Ceres

2. Venture along the West Coast to view the Namaqualand flowers

3. Go cherry picking at the Klondyke Cherry Farm

The last time I went on any of these three outings I was a child. I think back to the snow in Ceres and making snowmen with carrot noses and I smile. I think back to cramming into the bakkie and heading to look at the West Coast flowers and I smile. And, finally I think back to gorging myself on cherries, and climbing up ladders to get the really good ones at the top and I smile a lot.

The reason I haven't gone cherry picking since then is that I can never seem to remember when its cherry season. I know its snow season when it's cold. I know its flower season when it gets warmer. But when do cherries come out? Well, this is your heads up. Cherry picking season is from mid-November to the end of December.

So get together with friends and family and make an day of it. Go and handpick your own cherries straight from the trees at the Klondyke Cherry Farm, eating as you go. Then afterwards enjoy a braai beneath the pine trees.

The farm is open for picking from the 18th November until the New Year (except Christmas Day). The farm is open from 7 days a week from 8:30 to 16:30 Entry costs R15 which is nothing when you think about it, and it's R45 per kilogram for the cherries you've picked and want to take home. Call the Klondyke Cherry Farm at 023 312 1521 for more information.
