Galileo Open Air Cinema at Kirstenbosch

Last updated: Jun 08, 2015

The sun was about to set behind Table Mountain as we arrived at the Kirstenbosch Gardens for the Galileo Open Air Cinema. This unique ‘cinema’ takes place outdoors in a large field in Kirstenbosch with a massive blow-up screen against which the film is projected. The open air cinema offers a great way to enjoy movies during the summer months - taking in both the beauty of nature and great classic films.

We were there to see ‘Motorcycle Diaries’, and quickly got set up with snacks, drinks and chairs provided by the organisers. The chairs were truthfully a must-have especially if you’ve got a bad back like myself. The movie got going and it really was something to sit back and enjoy a good movie in and amongst Kirstenbosch Gardens. Luckily we’d brought blankets along with us as the evening air chilled as the movies went on.

If you enjoy movies and the outdoors then the Galileo Open Air Cinema is a great, novel way to enjoy both. The Galileo Open Air Cinema is back for the 2013/2014 summer season and has grown to three different venues around Cape Town: Kirstenbosch Gardens, V&A Waterfront, and the Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville.

To view the line-up of films for this summer you can go to http://www.thegalileo.co.za/kirstenbosch/programme.html. The films are screened each Tuesday at the Hillcrest Quarry, on Wednesdays at Kirstenbosch, and on Thursdays at the Waterfront. With 25 movies on the line-up at each venue, there will be plenty of outdoor movie watching opportunities this summer.
