A Golfer's Paradise in Mauritius

Last updated: Sep 29, 2014

Mauritius is one of the world's ultimate golfing destinations with its courses offering lush green fairways that run alongside the blue Indian Ocean and white sandy beaches. Enjoy a round of golf before heading back to the hotel to relax and unwind on the beach and alongside the swimming pool. Mauritius is perfectly set up for a dream breakaway for golf lovers.

There are a number of world class courses to choose from in Mauritius. We take a look at 6 of the top courses around the island.

Le Touessrok Golf Course

This 18-hole, par-72 course is set on its own island, Isle aux Cerf, and was recently voted in the Top 10 Best Golf Courses in the World. The course is surrounded by blue waters and white sand with breathtaking views along the course. Le Touessrok is a demanding course with many water hazards. Lower handicapped players will relish the course's challenge, while novice players might find the course quite difficult.

The course was designed by Bernhard Langer to make the most of this beautiful setting. Nine lakes on the course force players to be accurate, with many holes requiring tee shots over the water to the fairway. Accuracy is a premium on this course rather than distance. Despite the challenge of the course it is by far one of the most beautiful to play on.

Paradis Hotel & Golf Club

The Paradis Golf Club is one the most spectacular courses in all of Mauritius. Situated on the south west of the island the course lies below the spectacular Le Morne Mountain. The course runs around a private peninsula, with great views of the coral reef in the enclosed lagoon.

A great feature of the course is its accessibility, being just 20 metres from the Paradis Hotel reception. The greens fees are minimal and thanks to a partnership between Paradis Golf Club, Golf du Chateau, and Tamarina, guests can play on all 3 Championship golf courses. Two free weekly lessons are available for guests, and a computerised swing analysis helps you get the most out of your golfing game. Guests at Dinarobin can have their golf carts delivered to their suites before tee-off as an added service.

Designed by David Dutton, the course is challenging and rewards those with patience and smart play. The par 5's might seem short, but it is necessary to play wisely with the many water hazards on the course. Swirling winds from the mountains make the front 9 a challenge requiring precision. The back nine has many beautiful holes, but with five of them having water hazards accuracy is once again a necessity.

Belle Mare Plage Golf Club - The Legend

The Legend, situated on the east coast of the island, was opened in 1994 and hosts the Mauritius Open and the Johnny Walker Classic. The course was designed by Hugh Baiocchi, and is situated in a deer reserve with indigenous forests, volcanic rocks, lakes and spectacular views of the bay. The par-3, 17th is the signature hole with views across the bay, and a green perched on volcanic rock. This leads into the grand 522 yard, par-5, 18th that dog legs around a lake eventually ending in front of the clubhouse.

The course is only available for hotel guests at Belle Mare Plage or Le Prince Maurice, who pay no green fees to use the course. The Legend, which was opened in 1994, lives up to its name, and is a good challenge for top class golfers as well as amateurs. Belle Mare Plage is also home to The Links Course.

Golf du Chateau

Set in the background of a volcanic mountain on the southern coast of Mauritius lies the Golf du Chateau. The rolling fairways are wide, with the numerous water hazards and thick elephant grass forcing you to play straight up the fairways. Designed by Peter Matkovich, the renowned South African golf architect, the course is over 6500 metres and has many beautiful sea views.

The undulating landscape makes for some tricky golf with certain holes having blind greens. Some fairways are quite narrow and with the thick rough along the fairway, accuracy becomes very important. Two rivers cross the course adding to the demands on technique, yet allowing players to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the course. Five tee positions help players of different skill levels enjoy the course.

A PGA run golf academy provides you with all the help you will need on your swing. A 9 hole mashie course is also available at the site for those wanting to practice their short game, or for beginners wanting a fun day in the sun.
