Taste Good, Feel Good, Do Good - HEI Cafe

Last updated: Jul 25, 2014

Located in the heart of Braamfontein you will find HEI CAFÉ - Africa's first social café. It is not only a café but also a youth driven NGO, says Barbara Copelovici, CEO of the Hillbrow Entrepreneurship Initiative - which aims to contribute to South Africa's development through empowering entrepreneurs from disadvantaged areas.

The café boasts a 1000 book library, free wifi and a 8-seater conference room which is free and open to all, especially young designers, musicians and entrepreneurs. A range of interesting décor can be found in and around HEI CAFÉ and everything is for sale, from the paintings to the vintage furniture. Other items on sale include stylish beanies, paper purses, soft toys and other crafts. Once a month an auction is held at the café to make space for more cool things.

There is a lot to do at this cosy and homely café - unwind to the sweet sound of the vinyl, enjoy an authentic French crepe (a secret family recipe), try the fine Italian coffee, savour a light meal and join the weekly dinner brainstorming sessions on finding innovative solutions to the current state of our country.

Whether you are a student, entrepreneur or a professional, everyone is welcome and encouraged to get involved as you can help make a difference. The initiative is driven and managed by a varied group of students with a common hope of making a lasting change in their communities. HEI has already helped to launch the businesses of 5 homeless entrepreneurs - owing to the slogan, 'Homeless not hopeless'.

Operating hours: Monday 08:00 - 18:00, Tuesday to Friday 08:00 - 23:00, Saturday and Sunday 12:00 - 23:00. The café is located in the Heerengracht building - 87 De Korte street, Braamfontein.
