Last updated: Jul 17, 2014

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, which runs between Hermanus and Caledon, translates from Afrikaans as "Heaven and Earth" and it certainly lives up to its name. From the rising mountains to the beautiful vineyards, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is definitely a must when visiting Hermanus.

Why not take some time away from the coast to enjoy the country charm that this area also has to offer? We take a look at a view places to visit along the route.

Wine

The wines produced in the valley are unique to South Africa, and in many ways are more similar to wines produced in the North of France. This is due to the clay soil and cool sea breeze which makes the region ideally suited for producing quality pinot noir and chardonnay. A number of award winning wines have been produced in the area.

Sumaridge Wine Estate

The estate is well known for very good pinot noir, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, and the wines have a unique character because of the soil and closeness to the ocean.
