Shopping malls are the bane of my existence. Perhaps its my male tendencies, but malls really don't wake me up in the morning. They're too filled with polyester, neon lights, naked mannequins, crying children, bad music, and so-called 'sales'.
When local, artisanal, farmers markets came to Cape Town, a smile appeared on my face. Suddenly there were people sitting around chatting on long, rustic tables; a friendly guy in French-attire making good crepes; and a pretty girl selling Old English pies while some folky band plonked out their tunes. The market quickly became a friend that I'd visit for a prego roll, micro-brewed beer, and some good company.
Now this culture of local markets has gone up to Joburg, and will hopefully be turning the tide against malls.
Neighbourgoods Market
One of Cape Town's most popular and well-loved markets, the Neighbourgoods Market, has arrived in Johannesburg. The market is known for offering good quality products including fresh produce from the farm, artisanal goods, organic foods, micro-brewed beer, and much more. Expect a rustic and earthy feel, as you buy food from people who love the food they make.
Committed to urban rejuvenation, the Neighbourgoods Market aims to transform degraded areas back to their former glory, and so the market has been set up in the heart of Braamfontein. The goal is to revive the public market as a civic institution, encouraging people to come out for a day of good food and drink.
The Neighbourgoods Market is open every Saturday from 09:00 - 15:00 at 73 Juta Street (corner De Beer Street), Braamfontein.
Market on Main
Another market to look out for is the Market on Main, a market that is bringing together the best of Gauteng's food and art worlds. The market showcases home-made, local organic products that are both green and sustainable.
Forming part of the Maboneng Precinct, the Market on Main is part of a strategy to return Joburg city centre to its previous beauty and vibrancy. The market is linked to the Arts on Main art community who promote local artists with unique exhibition spaces.
The market is open on Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00 and takes place outdoors in a restored 1900's warehouse courtyard on Main Street in the Maboneng Precinct, on the east of Johannesburg City Centre.
