MJ recently stayed at Los Olivos in Franschhoek. Ideally located in the centre of town, Los Olivos provides the perfect base from which to explore this lovely winelands area.
We arrived on a sunny winter's afternoon, and were greeted and shown to our room for the weekend, Penthouse 1. The room has an eclectic and romantic feel that makes you feel comfortable and ready for a relaxing weekend away. My wife particularly liked the white folding room divider, while I eyed out the big comfy couch and TV. The apartments are situated in a piazza with gently flowing waterways offering an idyllic setting for the weekend.
After settling in, we made a cup of tea and headed out to the balcony that overlooks Franschhoek's main road and the mountains in the distance.
That night we booked a table at The French Connection, a wonderful restaurant about 20 metres from our door at Los Olivos. Here we were treated to wonderfully tasty food in a relaxed environment. I had the mussel starter, and looking around the restaurant I wasn't the only one who'd discovered this wonderful dish. After 3 courses we were full and ready to roll back to our room with a big smile on our faces.
The next morning we took a short walk down to the Franschhoek market where we browsed the many different stalls, grabbed a cup of coffee and had breakfast. A man was playing guitar and singing some classic songs while we enjoyed the dappled sunlight and shared a table with some friendly strangers.
Once we'd sated ourselves at the market we headed up to the Franschhoek Wine Tram, where we bought tickets and headed out to explore the surrounding wine estates. You can watch a video of our trip on the Wine Tram. It was a lot of fun and I'd highly recommend it as a way of exploring the Francshhoek valley. Because the Wine Tram office is a 1 minute walk from Los Olivos, we didn't have very far to walk once we arrived back after the tour. After a long day exploring the town and sampling the area's fine wines, we decided to stay in and got some pizza from ColCacchios, and spent the rest of the evening watching movies.
The following morning we awoke nice and relaxed. After checking out, we took a leisurely drive to a wine estate called Anura where we had brunch and afterwards popped into their deli where we bought a bit too much cheese. I say 'too much' but can you ever actually buy too much cheese? I don't think so.
If you're looking for a great place to stay in Franschhoek where everything is a 2 minute walk, then Los Olivos is the perfect place for you. We parked our car on Friday afternoon and didn't need it again until Sunday when we left. I loved not having to drive anywhere, and being able to enjoy the best that Franschhoek has to offer from one spot was a real plus.
