Kloofing in the Magaliesberg

Last updated: Jul 22, 2014

Kloofing, or canyoning as its known overseas, is all about getting into the wild and experiencing the beauty of mountain rivers and gorges. Kloofing is a fantastic outdoor activity centred around travelling down canyons using a combination of scrambling, climbing, jumping, abseiling, and swimming. The sport has been growing in popularity in the Cape, and now you can also head into the Magaliesberg to enjoy this exhilarating sport.

The Magaliesberg, between Johannesburg and the North-West Province, offers the ideal location to experience an outdoor adrenalin adventure. The trail takes you up through a shady gorge into the Magaliesberg Mountains, and is perfectly suited for fit and adventurous people who love to spend time in the water.

First you head up the river valley, a sunny hike across quartzite rock to the gully used to access the Magaliesberg Kloof. Next you head downstream with the kloof's magnificent cliffs closing in around you, wading through crystal clear pools, and clambering over massive boulders as you wind down the watercourse. Then you will abseil down a waterfall, and finally there is a great rock jump if you're brave enough to take the plunge.

The pace is quick, so when you stop for a well deserved lunch break you'll be keen to rest under the shade of the trees in the cool forested gorge.

The adventure starts at 08h00 and ends around 16h30, and the price is R490 per person which includes all kloofing gear, entrance permits and experienced guides to help you through the kloof. Please note that it is seasonal and runs from the end of October until the end of May. For more information go to www.govertical.co.za .
