Joburg's Night Market on Main

Last updated: Jun 12, 2015

The trendy Market on Main is held in the Maboneng Precinct in Johannesburg's city centre, and takes place every Sunday from 10h00 until 15h00 and on the first Thursday of every month as a night market from 19h00 until 23h00.

We were in Joburg for two nights and luckily arrived in time for a Thursday night market. As a Capetonian and market lover I was quite interested to see how our companions from up north sized up.

We arrived to the market and made our way upstairs to the main art gallery where there were a number of exhibitions on. One of my favourites was an exhibition of a series of portraits painted in stippling. I'm truthfully not a great art aficionado, in fact I just had to double check that stippling was the correct term, but the art was really good and there was a great atmosphere around the galleries with people laughing and schmoozing, champagne bottles opening, and the hmmmms of people like me pretending to know something about art.

We then headed downstairs to the main food market and it was buzzing. The room was chock full of people all trying to get food. There were a great number of options available, although it seems like you need to arrive early to get a space at a table.

Instead of jostling with the other patrons, we decided to head outside and get a table at Canteen. Situated amongst olive trees, the restaurant offers a great alfresco dining option and with Joburg's warm evenings it's a perfect spot. We ordered a platter for two that was really good and I can definitely recommend the halloumi.

There's plenty of other things to do and see in the Maboneng Precinct. You can watch an indie film at the Bioscope, enjoy a bite sized theatre experience at POPArt, get fit at Sir Stan's boxing gym, or go shopping at one of the 30 retail stores.
