Outdoors in Montagu

Last updated: Jul 22, 2014

Anyone who has visited the 'dorp' of Montagu will remember the quaint streets filled with historical buildings, the charming stores and coffee shops, and of course the natural hot springs for which the area are best known. But, Montagu is more than this. It is also becoming a very popular outdoor adventurer's paradise with the Langeberg Mountains offering the perfect place for exploring.

Rock climbing is extremely popular in the surrounding Langeberg Mountains, where you can find some of the best rock climbing in the world with over 200 climbs of varying skill level. The area is made popular with the high quality of rock and the good year-round conditions. If you prefer a less vertical outdoor experience, the scenic mountains are also home to many great hiking and mountain biking trails leading to breath-taking viewpoints of the surrounding area.

For those looking for something less strenuous, why not hop on board one of the Protea Farm Tractor Trips. A tractor takes you through the farm's apple and pear orchards into the mountains where you can enjoy the amazing views. Enjoy a traditional potjie meal either before or after the trip as you relax on this fun adventure for the whole family. The rides run every Wednesday and Saturday leaving at 10:00 and 14:00, and since their beginnings in 1985 the trips have become a major tourist attraction in the area.

For keen hikers and climbers, here is a list of a few trails that you should look out for:

Rock Climbing

Cogmans Buttress

A great climb with beautiful views of Montagu and surrounds. Another Day in Paradise is an easy to moderate pitch climb that goes up the buttress.

Bad Kloof

The Supertubes Crag has a classic climb that is a 26 grading called Thruster. This route is one of the more popular climbs in and around Montagu. Nearby, The Scoop routes offer great overhang climbs including Cool Like That.

Keur Kloof

The Rose Bowl climb is a great double pitch wall which gets shade in the afternoon. It's a 35 minute walk to the climb, but worth the hike. Certain routes require a 60 metre rope, but on most two 50 metre ropes will get you down. Further up the kloof you'll come to the Heaven Crag with a great climb called Madiba.

Bosch Kloof

Climbing has been restricted in this kloof with access to Legoland, but nothing beyond. Authorities are working to try and get the kloof open to climbers again. The popular Legoland Crag offers a great test for beginners with a friendly overhang at the top of the climb.
