Imagine you're cycling along the Mouille Point promenade with the crashing ocean on your left and our landmark Table Mountain further away to your right. The full moon is high in the night sky and literally lighting up the hundreds of people who are all joining together for #moonlightmass. Sound interesting? Then read on.
Every month at full moon a group of cyclists meet up and cycle through the beautiful Mother City. The ride is known as the #moonlightmass, and was started in January 2012. News of the cycle was spread via Twitter and has since grown in popularity.
It's a fun and social time for people of all ages, and the aim of the event is to raise awareness around the advantages of cycling in the city, as well as the safety of cyclists.
The route starts at the Green Point circle and heads down Granger Bay Boulevard and onto Beach Road. From there, riders winds their way along the Moullie Point Promenade and then head up and onto the Fan Walk cycle lane. The group then turns right into Long Street and cycles up this famous Cape Town street, before circling around and finally ending at &Union on Bree Street.
The route is more or less 12 kilometres in length; however most of the route is quite flat making it manageable even for those 'less fit' riders.
The ride starts at 21h15 on the night of the full moon which occurs. The event is free and open to everyone. All you need to join in is a bicycle, so head down to the Green Point circle for a fun night exploring the city.
