Mountain Biking in KwaZulu-Natal

If you aren’t already a mountain biking enthusiast, now is the perfect time of year to give it a try. Mountain biking is a great way to have fun with the whole family and get into shape at the same time.

Here are a few interesting and adventurous mountain biking spots in KZN:

Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park

Equipped with a world class BMX track and 40km of pristine trails – this is every riders dream – and is a great destination for the whole family. Trails can accommodate riders of various skill levels – from easy to expert. Bike riding trails, hiking trails and even camping sites for overnight stays make for a great outdoor experience. The park is located in the Pinetown area.

Enjoy breakfast, lunch or a snack after some riding fun at Giba Café, which is a relaxed open air coffee shop. The Park is also home to a fully fitted bike shop as well as The Play Market, which sells amazing items such as décor, children’s designer clothing and toys.

Hot showers and toilet facilities are available. All staff are level 1 first aid qualified and the park is looked after by an on-site security team for peace of mind.

Park Fees are R40 for adult riders, R15 for child riders and R10 for non-riders. Park hours are Monday to Sunday from 07h00 to 17h00.

Holla Trails

Located in Ballito, this company was established in March 2009. Holla Trails is comprised of a number of marked mountain biking trails which in total adds up to approximately 340 km. Trails are suitable for novice and experienced riders.

All trails are rated on a scale of 1 – 5 in terms of scenery, fitness, skills and overall pleasure of the ride, so riders know what they’re in for.

The Holla Trails Centre is located in a secure area so as to ensure that your car is safely parked while you enjoy your adventure filled day. There are shower facilities at the centre which will come in handy at the end of day. A small café can also be found nearby where you can grab a cold refreshment or a light snack.

Riders are welcome to arrive any time after 06h00 and are required to purchase day permits. Day Permit Cost: Adults R55, Youth (13-21) R30, Pensioners R30, Kids under 12 free and Trail runners R15. A bike wash is also available at a cost of R50 for non-members.

Karkloof Mountain Bike Trails

Situated in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, you will find the world-class Karkloof Mountain Bike trails. All riders are welcome regardless of whether you have experience or not.

There are 4 different trails - a 10, 20 and 30 km trail as well as an XCO route for the more advanced riders looking to test their skills. All trails are marked and graded for added convenience.

Riders are required to purchase a day pass which costs R30, and all riders must be aware that there is a strict “no helmet, no ride” policy here. Facilities include a club house, secure parking as well as hot showers. There are plenty of great accommodation establishments nearby should you wish to stay over in this beautiful area.
