Smallest Desert in the World

Last updated: Jul 25, 2014

Just outside of the town of Port Edward lies a miniature desert, just 200 metres in diameter, which is believed to be the smallest desert in the world. The desert has red soil and looks like a tiny Arizona Desert set against the lush vegetation of the KwaZulu Natal coast.

Some people believe aliens landed here and that their flying saucer formed this desert. Others, possibly more correctly, attribute the desert to a Zulu tribe who gathered in the area after they had stolen some cattle from the Pondos. The Zulus allowed the cattle to completely over-graze the land, after which the wind continued to erode the land. This in turn led to the isolated desertification.

A number of archaeological artefacts have been found in the desert, and as such efforts are being made to make the area into a conservancy. From the desert you can look into the green Umtamvuna Gorge. There are a number of trails in the area allowing you to enjoy this unique and beautiful area surrounding Port Edward.
