A Writer's Break at Durban's Red Tudor

Last updated: Oct 04, 2016

Brett recently went on holiday to Durban and had a wonderful time relaxing and writing at Red Tudor in Westville. Whether for work or leisure, Red Tudor offers the perfect base for your break .

Sometimes, when 'getting away' you don't want to be too far from the city you are visiting and so staying within the suburbs feels like a practical idea on that account. But, you don't want to have it feel like you're staying in the suburbs. Fortunately Red Tudor Bed and Breakfast, in the heart of Westville, Durban, manages to save you from just that.

As the gate closes behind you and you drive on to the property, it has the feel of being its own special set-apart place. From the well looked after lawn stretching out in front of you and exotic plants creatively displayed in Eastern styled flower pots, down to the huge swimming pool alongside the Thai Massage parlour on the property, everything whispers peace and tranquillity. Over the garden wall there are palm trees and a whole host of greenery subtly hinting that you are in the middle of a jungle as opposed to a suburb.

I was warmly greeted by the owner Rinaldi, despite showing up an hour before check-in time and she graciously showed me to my room and shared some of the story of the place. I had been looking forward to trying out the Thai Massage for my first time and was disappointed to hear that due to the lack of available masseuses, they did not actually have anyone on location during my stay. However Rinaldi quickly got me connected to the lady running the massage and I had an appointment on-site the following morning. As easy as that.

My main purpose for being at a Bed and Breakfast in Westville was to furiously finish off a book I had been writing and so the peacefulness of the venue really helped me out. My room was large with two comfortable beds, a writing desk space which was perfect, vibey African style paintings and general décor that gave the room a home-away-from-home feel. A small fridge, microwave and toaster meant that I could really shut myself in and stick to the writing if I wanted to, but there were experiences to be had.

First up was breakfast which completely set me up for a great day. A combination of fruit salad, juices and coffee were the preamble to a cooked breakfast with eggs offered in a variety of styles. Enough tables to sit and chat with the other guests or to hermit yourself off to the side, or even sit outside and admire the stunning view.

Then came my foray into the world of Thai Massage and definitely not a one-time encounter for me. Having treated my wife on many occasions with an assortment of massages it was my turn to find out what it was like. After a slight language misunderstanding following a "Take off your clothes and lie on your back" opening instruction ["Your front, I meant front, sorry!"] the rest was pure heaven and an invitation to feel absolutely relaxed for the next day or two. The masseuse was friendly and professional and I would highly recommend this experience to anyone staying here.

I found Rinaldi an excellent host - it was a bit of a stressful time for her as she was simultaneously co-ordinating a huge tourism event with the German School across the road, which she pulled off well despite some out-of-her-control happenings, like the guest speaker being incredibly late. Yet, she still found time to answer any questions, give me some insight into the history of the place and ensure that my stay was a comfortable one.
