Simon's Town - Just Nuisance and Other Stories

Simon's Town has been a navy base for over 200 years from 1814 when the British controlled the Cape colony until today as the base of the South African Navy. This wonderful sea-side town is a popular tourist destination not only for its rich history, but also for the quaint village atmosphere that the town exudes.

We started our day at the South African Navy Museum. Entrance to the museum is free and all that is asked for is a donation to the running of the museum. There's quite a lot to see and do including going into a replica submarine, reading the many interesting stories from the navy's past, and visiting the Transformation Display which aims to emphasize the multi-cultural nature of the navy and other armed forces.

The South African navy has included some interesting characters over the years, none more unique and interesting than Just Nuisance. This Great Dane moved to Simon's Town with its owner in 1937, and used to hang around the dockyards and lie on the gangplanks, earning him his affectionate nickname Just Nuisance.

He would often catch the train with the sailors and got very good at knowing which stop was his. Eventually the railway officials demanded that his fare be paid or he wouldn't be allowed on board. After some discussion it was decided to enlist Just Nuisance into the navy, entitling him to free train rides. Able Seaman Just Nuisance became something of a celebrity and would often appear at official functions in aid of the War Effort. The statue overlooking the harbour is a reminder of this wonderful animal and the enduring mark he left on the town.

Next we headed off to Boulder's Beach to go and spot some penguins. This sheltered cove with its iconic large granite boulders offers the perfect opportunity to spot penguins. The best viewing spot is on Foxy Beach where a relatively new boardwalk has been built, but visitors can also go down to the beach for a swim. There is a fee for the entrance to Boulders. When we went the fee was R65 for adults, and R35 for children.

Finally we stopped off at the Salty Dog at the Simon's Town waterfront for fish and chips. You can sit on one of the benches on the harbour wall watching the comings and goings of the boats in the harbour.

We had a great time in Simon's Town and can definitely recommend it for a great day out.
