Stephanie and her family recently had the pleasure of spending a weekend in one of the warm and homey chalets within the picturesque Slanghoek Mountain Resort. The resort is in the beautiful Breede River Valley, with the nearest town being the wine and farming community of Rawsonville.
Near the eastern flanks of the Du Toitskloof Mountains you'll find this peaceful family-friendly resort surrounded by breath-taking natural beauty and spectacular views. The resort offers unique camping sites as well as comfortable self-catering accommodation.
The self-catering Safari Tents are equipped with most of the essentials that campers would need, while the self-catering chalets are equipped with heaters, fans, refrigerators, microwave, oven, stove, kettle, toaster as well as basic cutlery and crockery. Bedding and towels are also provided. Guests can enjoy indoor and outdoor braai facilities as well as a selection of DStv channels.
The resort boasts a wide range of attractions and activities including 2 sparkling swimming pools, trampolines, kiddies jungle gym, putt-putt, fishing spots, a 1-hour circular walk, kiddies horse rides, adult outrides and lots more. The area is also home to an abundance of wine cellars and restaurants to be enjoyed such as the Slanghoek Winery, Opstal Estate and Jason's Hill Private Cellar.
We left from Cape Town on a sunny Friday afternoon, and reached Slanghoek in just over an hour. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the friendly receptionist who helped us check-in and told us a bit about the resort as well as the exciting activities which were lined up for our weekend.
Our 5-sleeper chalets was quaint, neat and very homey. It contained everything a guest could need from kitchen essentials to fresh towels and linen - a real convenience when travelling.
After unpacking and having a light snack we decided it was time to do some exploring. The first thing we noticed where the absolutely magnificent views. We had a look at the different accommodation types - there really is a lovely variety of accommodation here to suit everyone's preferences - and we thought that the Safari Tents looked really great. While exploring we came across a quaint chapel home to an antique organ and beautifully frosted and stained glass windows.
We crossed over a long wooden bridge constructed over a gently flowing stream and discovered the start point for the 1-hour circular trail, which we would be doing bright and early the next morning. We also came across the putt-putt area which was occupied by lots of satisfied kiddies.
After a stroll to the pools, where we dipped our feet in to cool off for a bit, we took a look at the stunning lapa alongside the pool area, and then had a browse in the shop and restaurant located on the resort. The shop is filled with the most amazing local produce and handmade gifts.
After taking some photo's in the vineyards we made our way back to the chalet to start supper and get ready for bed as we had a full and exciting day planned for Saturday.
After a relaxing night, we woke at about 05h00 and watched the beautiful sunrise with a steaming hot cup of coffee. We enjoyed some freshly baked "plaas brood" delivered right to our doorstep along with a full house breakfast prepared by myself. Thereafter we packed some water along with a picnic blanket and made our way to the starting point of the 1-hour circular trail. We reached the halfway lookout point in at about 30 minutes and we stopped to snap a few photo's and admire the beauty that this place has to offer. After this fairly easy trail we made our way down to the stables for our much anticipated outride.
We were taken out through the stunning farm vineyards for just over half an hour, while our lovely guide told us stories and facts about the surrounding area. The horses were spectacular - so gentle and well-behaved.
We then made our way back to our chalet for some light snacks before taking a drive to the nearby Platbos Cabins which overlook a large dam. These wooden cabins are situated on the slopes of the Slanghoek Mountains and are very secluded and serene, perfect for a quiet and tranquil getaway.
After an exciting and busy day we decided to head back to the chalet for some dinner - a braai of course, as we watched the Springboks rugby game.
After the day's excitement and adventure we were ready for a good night's rest. The next morning we had a light breakfast and sadly started packing up our belongings, after having a really relaxing weekend in the country. We will definitely be visiting this resort again as the accommodation and service were superb.
