I was pleasantly surprised by my first time visit to St Lucia, a small coastal town right in the heart of the St Lucia Wetland Park World Heritage Site. It has very friendly locals, inquisitive tourists, lots of interesting activities with easy access, great sub-tropical weather and being from Cape Town, and a feeling of being right in the middle of Africa.
The St Lucia area offers great educational, leisure and fun activities; from Deep Sea Game fishing, taking a cruise on the estuary with a sun downer to get close to the numerous hippo families or just relaxing with a picnic basket for a day of fun in the sun and lukewarm sea water at Cape Vidal beach. (Look out for Rhino grazing next to the road in the beautiful green hilly landscape when driving through Isimangaliso Wetland park on your way to Cape Vidal!)
I had a magical time in St.Lucia and would recommend it to anyone who plans to visit South African shores and even South Africans who haven't been there yet.
The area is predominantly covered in mangroves, and these mangrove forests are one of the most important eco systems in the world. They are specially adapted to an estuarine environment.
The reeds are threatening to the mangrove forests as they are not supposed to be growing in the estuary, but in recent years have become more abundant on the banks of the St Lucia Estuary because of drought - the estuary is not connected to the ocean anymore which affects the waters salinity and thus allows the reeds to grow in the estuary.
