Must-See Art in Stellenbosch

The streets of Stellenbosch are steeped in history and are home to some superb galleries – showcasing both established and up and coming artists.

The Stellenbosch Art Gallery is in Ryneveld Street and displays works of a wide range of South African artists and masters as well sculpture and ceramics.

The SMAC gallery on Church Street is a contemporary gallery showcasing work of local and international artists, and plays host to regular exhibitions.

The Johan Coetzee Art Gallery is at 71 Plein Street and specialises in original paintings by South African masters and other well-known South African artists. They also sell bronze sculptures by well-known sculptor Llewellyn Davies and beautiful ceramics by among others Hennie Meyer, Charmaine Haines and Tania Babb.

The Rupert Museum showcases the unique private art collection of Anton and Huberte Rupert. Set amongst picturesque vineyards and oak trees on the banks of the Eersterivier, the museum is home to 350 works, and can be regarded as the premier collection of contemporary South African art from the period 1940 to 1970.Open Monday – Saturday from 10am – 4pm.

The works of the highly acclaimed South African sculptor Dylan Lewis can be viewed on a visit to the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden at his property in Stellenbosch. Visits are by appointment only and can be booked by emailing info@dylanat.co.za

Take a step back into yesteryear with a visit to the Stellenbosch Village Museum. Here four wonderfully preserved homes and their gardens showcase a different historical period of Stellenbosch complete with beautiful furniture and furnishings. Open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 5pm, and Sundays from 9am to 4pm (summer months) and 9am to 1pm (winter months).
