Stellenbosch's New Drive-in

Last updated: Jul 10, 2014

When I first heard about a drive-in in Stellenbosch my initial response was skepticism. Did they actually mean to say drive-through? Because if I travel all the way to Stellenbosch only to find out that there's a newly opened McDonalds in town - someone is going to pay!

But, I made a trip this past Friday and I can accurately report back that they really do mean drive-in. The drive-in is run guerilla-style, which means the set up is cheap and easy, but it only adds to the old feel of the evening. Sitting there on the back of a bakkie watching the films, I felt part of an old tradition of film-goers. I had only been to the drive-in once before, when I sat in the back of my older brother's VW Golf and we ate giant burgers. Great memories came flooding back.

We took a few bakkies through to Stellenbosch which was a great strategy as it meant you could put a mattress down and get a bunch of people on the back. We tuned the radio to the right frequency and settled down for our two films. The two films that were showing were 'Cocktail', the 80s Tom Cruise film, and 'Big Wednesday', a 70s surfer film. The films were of the 'cheesy' variety, but it was a lot of fun just for the unique experience.

The drive-in happens every Friday during summer in Stellenbosch starting at 20:00. Run by the employees of the local cult DVD rental shop, Filmhouse, the drive-in is quickly growing in popularity. The cost is R50 per car for two films shown back-to-back. For more information about what's showing and to book your ticket, visit http://www.cinemuse.co.za/2010/01/venue-drive-in.html.
