It also has a wide selection of must-try restaurants with something to suit everybody. Here's our choice of the top 5:

1. For food & wine pairings

Creation Wines Restaurant with its spectacular views of the Hemel-en-Aarde valley presents their award winning wines in a variety of creative ways. Their hugely popular Wine & Food & Lunch is highly recommended – but depending on the time of your visit you could also choose to try the 10am Brunch Pairing, the Tapas Pairing or the Wine & Chocolate Pairing – even the kids are catered for with a special Kids Surprise Pairing. Bookings are pretty much essential – and if you’re visiting in the December/January holiday period, plan ahead!

2. For cocktails on the beach

The only restaurant in Hermanus that is literally right on the beach, Dutchies is a Hermanus institution and overlooks the popular Grotto Beach. This casual eatery is open all day for breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails. You can expect good food at good prices.

3. For people watching

Located right on the edge of the bay in the heart of bustling Hermanus, Burgundy Restaurant is another Hermanus landmark with a great view. There’s a reason that there is almost always a queue (in peak season) - they serve consistently great food with warm and friendly service from staff and management alike. The outdoor seating area beneath the shade of trees and umbrella’s is the ideal spot to watch the world go by while enjoying a local craft beer or a perfectly chilled glass of wine from one of the local vineyards.

4. For simply fabulous food

Right on the central Piazza, you will find the delightful Pear Tree Bistro. This unassuming eatery with its bright green bench seating and umbrella’s, has views of the ocean and a bustling atmosphere. They serve delicious breakfasts and tapas as well as main meals for lunch and dinner –plus a varied selection of local wines and craft beers.

5. For the view

Bientang's Cave Seafood Restaurant is carved into the depths of a century old cave extending over the rocks almost to the water's edge. Specialising in seafood and famous for their bouillabaisse soup. During the whale season months of May – September you’d be very unlucky not to spot a whale right from your table.
