The Two Oceans Marathon is just one month away and, if you're not lacing up your takkies for the big race, why not go support your fellow fitties on the 26th March along one of the most scenic marathon routes in the world? We've chosen a number of the best spots to catch the 56km and a number of places to stay along the world's most beautiful marathon route.
The 56km, as well as the 21km, start outside SA Breweries in Main Road, Newlands. While watching the start is one of the best parts, with over 27 000 runners expected this year you might struggle to find a space! If you're sure to watch the start, however, Highlands Country House is one of the closest places to the start of the route, located in one street parallel to Main Road.
For all you standing supporters, Main Road in Lakeside is identified as one of the hotspots for onlookers. This is about 12km into the 56km, and here you'll find Capeblue Manor House, ideally located a few metres from Main Road.
The halfway mark for the 56km is along Kommetjie Road in Fish Hoek. A Place In Thyme will give you close access to just before the halfway mark, and Epic Guest House, Noordhoek Sunshine Lodge and House at Pooh Corner will give views of runners as they start their second half. Noordhoek Village is also a popular spot for supporters to stand.
Runners then hit Chapman's Peak Drive and Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel is the ideal accommodation for waving to passing runners. The next area to see them is Hout Bay Main Road, where Le Marais Guest House, 3 Plumtree Villa and 3 Plumtree Cottage are all within walking distance. Constantia Nek is a notoriously challenging part of the 56km, so as much support is needed as possible!
Along Rhodes Drive, Cecelia Forest is a hotspot for supporters to stand. Klein Bosheuwel Guesthouse and The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel are found along this route. Kirstenbosch Gardens is popular all-year round and is a particularly popular to be during the marathon; where 21km and 56km runners meet to finish the last 5km.
Union Avenue is the last stretch of road where runners can be seen before reaching the famous finish line at the UCT rugby fields. Nearby places to stay close to UCT include Rondebosch Manor Boutique Hotel and Rondebosch Guest House.
