Duck Parade and Blending Experience at Vergenoegd

Last updated: Aug 30, 2017

The world famous duck parade at Vergenoegd attracts visitors from far and wide who come to experience this unique experience. But it’s not just the waddling ducks that are attracting visitors. The estate boasts some lovely wines and have branched into blending tours that are unique and emphasize the estate’s focus on biodiversity and the importance of creating great products well.

This eco-focussed wine estate have been using runner ducks since 1984 to assist with the control of the snail and pest population. Using the ducks as part of their farming allows the estate to not use chemicals. This has earned Vergenoegd WWF biodiversity certification. Visitors are encouraged to come get a first-hand experience of the ducks, and it really makes for a lovely family day out.

Due to the change in season, the ducks are heading to the vineyards earlier during the week from Monday 15 May. You are welcome to follow them into the vineyards to see how they perform their eco-friendly duties of chemical-free pest control!

There is plenty else to see and do at the estate. We decided to do an olive oil blending and had a lovely time learning about olive oil and getting quite scientific with beakers and pipettes. Our host for the day was Ryan, who delivered a very interesting overview of the history of the estate and made the olive oil blending experience interesting and fun.

Next we decided to do some wine tasting which takes place on long wooden tables under tall trees. The Vergenoegd Wine Estate has a remarkable terroir and climate and produces three wine ranges: the classic range, the runner duck range, and the vintage range. The wine tasting costs R35 for 5 wines, and is open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 5pm, and on Sunday from 10am until 4pm.

There is plenty else to see and do at the estate including wine blending, chocolate blending, tea blending, picnics, as well as dining at their lovely restaurant. For more information you can go to www.vergenoegd.co.za.
