After a long and productive week at work, I couldn't be happier that it was Friday. What made this day even better was the realisation that in only a few short hours I would be on holiday in the beautiful coastal town of Kleinmond.
Unfortunately weather was not on our side but we were adamant that would not dampen our spirits as we would be spending the weekend at Die Rotse Host House and Self Catering Apartments. This four star establishment is a seafront property located in a peaceful cul-de-sac and framed by beautifully lush surroundings.
Upon arrival our host, Werner, warmly welcomed us and gave us a detailed tour of the Spykerklip unit, where we would be staying for the weekend. Spykerklip is a luxurious upper level apartment which boasts an en-suite main bedroom with breath taking views overlooking the ocean. There are two more stunning bedrooms in this unit which overlook the Kogelberg Mountain Range. This unit sleeps 6 guests comfortably and all bedrooms are extended by spacious balconies.
The fully-equipped kitchen has a sleek, elegant and sophisticated look and feel and is packed with modern appliances. There is an open-plan dining area that leads to the cosy lounge which shares a balcony with the main en-suite bedroom. A second modern bathroom serves the two other bedrooms. Facilities include secure undercover parking, a stylish outdoor braai area, free Wi-Fi and so much more.
After the tour had been completed, we unpacked, started supper then settled down in the warm lounge and watched a movie, which was provided by our thoughtful host.
The next morning we were woken by the sound of rain - a bit disappointing, but we decided that should not spoil our well-deserved weekend away. After filling up on a full farmstyle breakfast, we made our way outdoors to do some exploring. The first thing that caught our attention were the beautiful gardens at Die Rotse - filled with a variety of herbs and large bright sunflowers.
We walked around to the front of the property and were hit by the fresh sea breeze. The mesmerising waves were smashing on the huge rocks in front of us. (Only a few metres away from the property.) Werner told us that many guests enjoy fishing and crayfishing from these beautiful rocks.
This area is not only great for fishing but also whale watching as this is the playground and breeding zone for the Southern Right Whale. Many dolphins can also be spotted surfing the waves here.
When in Kleinmond, a visit to Harbour Road is a definite must. Here you will plenty of interesting and colourful shops such as The Potters Gallery and The Fishing Cat - where you can purchase beautiful gifts, collectables, confectionery and lots more. There is also a variety of restaurants and cafés to choose from including Gringo's Waterfront Saloon and Restaurant, here you can enjoy a light breakfast, ribs, seafood and pizza.
Other attractions in this area include two sandy beaches: Sandown Beach and Kleinmond Main Beach, which is only a 300m stroll away from Die Rotse and has been awarded with Blue Flag status.
There is also a lagoon nearby where you can relax and enjoy a picnic under the milk wood trees while the kids play in the park. Or, hire a small boat and paddle around the lagoon, admire the feral horses and surf at the point of the lagoon. There is also a natural tidal pool just 40m away from Die Rotse which makes for great fun for the kids.
Once you obtain the necessary permits you could also enjoy rock and surf angling, crayfishing, kayak fishing and snorkelling.
A visit to the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens in nearby Betty's Bay also makes for a lovely outing. This beautiful and secluded paradise boasts several kilometres of nature trails and stunning views of this scenic area.
We awoke on Sunday morning feeling rejuvenated, relaxed and refreshed. Reluctantly we started packing our bags, as sadly we would have to be heading home and back to reality. After packing the car, we chatted with Werner for a while and could not thank him enough for the great weekend we had enjoyed - he had been a wonderful host and really went out of his way to make sure that we enjoyed our stay.
Although we opted for the self-catering accommodation, Werner did explain the host house concept to us which is popular with international guests wanting a full South African experience. The hosts demonstrate typical South African hospitality and takes special care to ensure that all the needs of the guests are met. Special traditional meals such as potjiekos and braaied snoek can be prepared for guests and are served with local wines when possible. All of this adds to making sure that guests enjoy a superior and unforgettable holiday experience.
We said our goodbyes and then headed back to Cape Town once again having been reminded that as South Africans we are so incredibly fortunate to live in such a magical and naturally beautiful country. It seems that no matter where you travel, there is always so much beauty to see.
