Glamping fun at AfriCamps at Doolhof!

Last updated: Feb 05, 2019

Stephanie and her family recently visited the amazing AfriCamps at Doolhof Wine Estate in Wellington.

The small town of Wellington is only a 45 minute drive from Cape Town making it just ideal for a weekend away. Nestled at the base of the Groenberg Mountains, with the Hawequa Mountains in the distance and the Kromme River running through, Wellington is a truly beautiful destination.

Apart from the stunning scenery which really lends itself to some serious rest and relaxation, visitors can also explore one of the many beautiful hikes in the area, or pop into some of the nearby wine estates to enjoy some wine tasting.

We recently had the great pleasure of staying at the newly opened AfriCamps at Doolhof Wine Estate during the peak of summer. Upon arrival at Doolhof, we headed to the tasting room to check-in where we were met by Mark who warmly welcomed us and guided us to our tent. After a quick tour we were left to settle in to our fabulous ‘home’ for the weekend.

There are six luxury glamping tents at AfriCamps at Doolhof - each with magnificent mountain views (best enjoyed while soaking in your outdoor hot tub!) and surrounded by vineyards. At Doolhof two white varietals, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, and a number of reds are grown and a visit to the estate’s tasting room is a must for every wine enthusiast.

If you love being outdoors, then there is plenty here to keep you busy! You can enjoy a picturesque hike or a rambling river walk, try out the various mountain bike trails (including one for the kids), visit the wonderful wine tasting room where you can try some of the estate’s award-winning wines along with a lunch platter, and then of course there is your private outdoor wood-fired hot tub. If you’re still not feeling relaxed you can choose from a selection of spa treatments to enjoy in the comfort of your own tent. And, if after all that the thought of preparing lunch is just too much you can order a delicious picnic – including vegetarian and kiddies options.

If you venture away from the estate you can pop into town, visit one of the many surrounding Wellington wine farms and distilleries or even play a round of golf at one of the world class golf courses in the area.

Now, back to our tent!

The AfriCamps ‘glamping’ (aka glamorous camping) concept is one that has really taken off – and it’s easy to see why. You get that outdoor feeling and a closeness to nature – while still enjoying convenience and a fair dose of luxury.

One of the highlights of the tents at AfriCamps Doolhof is that each tent has its own fabulous outdoor wood-fired hot tub (which can also be left to cool and enjoyed as a splash pool).

Indoors there is a spacious open plan lounge area with a comfy couch, a dining area with solid wooden table and seating for 5 guests, a fully-equipped kitchen, two bedrooms which comfortably sleep 5 guests, and a roomy bathroom complete with hot shower, flushing toilet and basin.

Both of the bedrooms have a comfy queen size bed (with lovely linen) and each have their own entrance. One of the bedrooms also contains a single bunk bed – perfect for kids. The tents have air-conditioning, which is great for hot summer nights, and an indoor fireplace to keep cosy in cooler weather.

Outside you have a spacious wooden deck with a braai and comfortable deck loungers for relaxing and soaking up the view.

Once we’d settled in and fully explored our tent we headed outdoors and wandered along a nearby trail just enjoying the scenery and the estate. Later back at our tent it was sundowner time – and more importantly time to jump into the amazing wood-fired hot tub! Just fabulous!

After all that relaxing we slept like a dream in our comfy beds and the air-conditioning kept us perfectly cool and comfortable. The next morning we awoke feeling absolutely rested and refreshed. Enjoying our breakfast out on the deck while listening to the gentle sound of the nearby river was just the perfect way to start the day.

A bit of exploring and a quick visit to Wellington was on the agenda and then it was time to get in some more quality relaxation time. Come evening we were able to sit out on our deck alongside a roaring fire with a few drinks as we watched the day slip away. We couldn’t help but simply admire the breathtaking views all around us and then as it got darker the magical starry sky before drifting off to bed.

After another peaceful nights rest our absolutely stunning weekend had to come to an end and we reluctantly packed up our goodies and set off for home.

We had the most amazing time at AfriCamps at Doolhof Wine Estate. Thanks AfriCamps for a wonderful stay! And the best part, is that there are plenty more AfriCamps locations just waiting to be explored.
