Paradise in Paternoster - Cala Mondrago

Last updated: May 16, 2019

Stephanie and her family recently visited the amazing Cala Mondrago in Paternoster.

We recently escaped the city for a relaxing weekend along the West Coast and settled in the beautiful town of Paternoster. This wonderful coastal town, located only 1 hour and 40 minutes from Cape Town, is known for its quaint and charming West Coast feel, white-washed fishermen’s cottages and colourful fishing boats moored on the sandy beaches.

The people of Paternoster typify a West Coast spirit of warmth and hospitality, and Paternoster is in fact the oldest fishing village on the West Coast. Visitors can buy fresh fish directly from the fishermen, with good catches of snoek in winter and crayfish in summer.

Adding further appeal is the beautiful Fynbos that surrounds Paternoster and in spring the wildflowers bloom in their thousands, making for a spectacular view. There are good sightings of whales and dolphins from the shore in season, and smaller sea creatures make it a popular spot with snorkelers and divers.

After our scenic drive up the west coast we arrived at our destination – Cala Mondrago, and were met by the lovely and welcoming owner Sandele.

Cala Mondrago is a self-catering family house, beautifully decorated and only a few steps away from the beach. It's named after the pristine beach on the island of Majorca. The owners have explored the world onboard their yacht, but eventually decided on Paternoster as their dream destination.

Each bedroom is spacious and has a queen-size bed with two of the bedrooms having lovely en-suite bathrooms.

There is a large dining table with seating for up to eight people and the kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge, microwave, dishwasher and oven. An added bonus is the large fireplace, perfect for chilly winter evenings.

During our stay we enjoyed the most amazing weather – warm with only a light cool breeze and not a cloud to be seen in the azure sky.

We enjoyed walks on the nearby beach, dipped our toes in the pool and explored the wonderful collection of little shops in the area, all filled with beautiful treasures! Paternoster is also home to a range of restaurants and lovely eateries, sure to satisfy any taste.

Visitors can also pay a visit to the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, which has picnic spots and braai facilities for visitors to enjoy - plus check out the Cape Columbine light house. It is the last manually controlled lighthouse in South Africa and was built in 1936 on Castle Rock.

It’s always such a pleasure to stay in a seaside town – the greatest part for me is falling asleep while listening to the sound of the nearby waves – incredibly relaxing and therapeutic. On our last night at Cala Mondrago we braaied, chilled and chatted in the comfy lounge. Just what you want from a weekend away!

We really had a very comfortable stay - the house is well equipped with a swimming pool, two outside braai areas (depending on the wind direction!), satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, good security and it's pet-friendly. Our beautiful fur-kid Bella joined us on this getaway and just had the most amazing time.

We left a little piece of our hearts in Paternoster and cannot wait to return for another family holiday.
